Top Five T.V. Shows of 2014

Every year we get a lot of good T.V. and a lot of bad. We enjoy hours of entertainment. Reality shows are born and lost. Shows premiere. Some stay awhile. Some get a season then never heard from again. Every year you fall for your favorite shows all over again and to fall in love with new ones. And every year we make lists. And I'm no different.

Following will be a list of my top five shows of 2014. But there are two things to point out first. One, this is my list. This is my opinion. Your list will be different than mine and that's okay. Two, this is not about quality. This is about shows that I enjoyed. So, shows that I will admit that are better made may not be here because I didn't enjoy them as much as I did others. Let's get this started, not with number 5, but with honorable mentions.

Honorable Mentions

Some new shows really hit the mark. Jane the Virgin and Selfie served up the laughs then the heart. The Flash is a successful spin-off that could find itself in the top five next year. Then there are the returning shows that killed with a second season. Bates Motel, The 100, and Faking It! all improved with a second season. And of course you got the established shows. Grimm, Parks and Recreation, and Haven just to name a few. And after my top five, I think it's clear that it was a good year of t.v. that should just get better next year.

#5- Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

A show that just got better and better. After a rocky first fifteen episodes of the first season, Agents found, not just its footing, but also what it wanted to be. Once Disney and Marvel gave them the go ahead to use certain things and told them were they could go, Agents took advantage of the second season to make a great show. Yes, only the first half of the second season has been shown, but it did what it had to. I don't think there was a bad episode in this season. Sure, some were better than others and it had its problems. But it added characters you couldn't help but love and plot lines that kept you interested. And I couldn't wait to see the next episode every week. What more could you ask for in a shows second season?

#4- Orange is the New Black

Netflix knows how to make shows. They make that clear year after year. Next year they kick off their Marvel shows. But this year they showed off their already good shows. Once again this is a second season that was better than the first. OITNB is funny and heartwarming. It's a dramedy that knows what works and sticks with it. With new characters mixing in with the old and not afraid to take a risk. This is a binge worthy show that makes you regret doing that because that means you just got a longer period of time between new episodes.

#3- Arrow

The show that launched The Flash, Arrow is a superhero show with no equal at the moment. It is  not afraid to honor the comics while also taking their own shot at things, It followed up its wonderful second season with one that continued with the momentum. From the ending of the first episode, you knew this season wasn't going to be predictable. And it hasn't. This season wasn't afraid to dip into the comics. And the crossover episode was one of the best of the series. Sure, the murder mystery got a little tiring, which is why it's only at 3. But the show continued doing what it does best: characters and action. The fights are the best on t.v. and the main characters are some of the best core characters out there.

#2- Orphan Black

One of the best science fiction shows on television. With a mix of drama, comedy, and suspense that very few shows have been able to do, Orphan Black has a rich set of characters, half of them played by Tatiana Maslany, that are more interesting then they have the right to be. With plots and story that keep getting better, I don't think I can wait till April for a new season. Truthfully this show doesn't get the attention I think it deserves. There really isn't much more to say than go watch it.

#1- The Legend of Korra

We didn't get one terrific season, but two of this show. Yes, I'm probably am putting this here because it is over, but also because it deserves it. From flawed, but interesting, heroes and villains to stories that really surpassed anything that has been on Nickelodeon. And I refuse to call it a kids show. Yes, it is on Nick and has a 7+ rating. But what it did was for better than many other shows on television. The includes live action. It was made by Nick for kids but told stories of complicated characters that adults enjoyed and understood. It was never afraid to do what it wanted and did it despite many obstacles that was thrown in its way. It's a show that I will miss deeply and will probably watch all the way through a few more times.

So, that is my top shows. What are your's? What did I miss? Let me know.
